Perhaps no Star Wars movie has suffered more indignities at the hands of George Lucas' endless tampering than Return of the Jedi. The third Star Wars film—sixth chronologically—has undergone dozens of hamfisted, annoying changes over the nearly thirty five years since its release, with none of them really adding anything to the narrative. Thankfully the good folks over at Screen Junkies are here to call Lucas to the carpet with their latest Honest Trailer.
If you were to ask me to name three changes Lucas has made to RotJ since its initial release that I don't mind, I'd only be able to name one: Removing Vader's bushy eyebrows. All of the rest of these changes range from grating (the blinking Ewoks), to downright annoying (the musical number in Jabba's palace) to borderline offensive (replacing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen). The biggest crime committed by Lucas, however, has to be the excision of the Ewoks "Yub Nub" song. I was livid in 1997 when I heard it had been replaced and that anger has only increased over time. Thank goodness they call him out on that, otherwise this would've been a total missed opportunity.
Seriously though, I don't think there's a Star Wars fan in the world that grew up with the "Yub Nub" song that doesn't consider it as integral a part of Star Wars as the Force. If you're gonna have Ewoks, you've gotta give me that damn song. It's all I've got left.
